Berdych, Ljubicic winners in openers at Mason

Thirteenth-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny also advanced by drilling Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty 6-3, 6-1 at this U.S. Open Series tournament.

German Nicolas Kiefer upended two-time major titlist and former world No. 1 Marat Safin of Russia 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), while former No. 1 Carlos Moya surprised former Tennis Masters Cup titlist David Nalbandian 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2). Moya and Nalbandian have now split six career meetings, with the previous five all coming on clay.

The 2002 Cincinnati champion Moya will face last week's Rogers Masters titlist Novak Djokovic in the second round here.

In other Day-1 action, Spain's Fernando Verdasco vaulted past Italian Filippo Volandri 6-2, 6-2; Spaniard Nicolas Almagro defeated German Florian Mayer 7-6 (7-5), 6-4; Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela charged past fading Brit Tim Henman 6-4, 3-6, 6-3; Finn Jarkko Nieminen drilled American qualifier Vincent Spadea 6-2, 6-0; and Austrian Jurgen Melzer edged out 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).

American Andy Roddick topped Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in last year's finale here, a battle between former world No. 1s.

This week's top seeds are last week's Montreal Masters runner-up Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Roddick, who also titled here in 2003 and was the runner-up to Federer in 2005.

This week's fourth seed is the Serbian Djokovic, who stunned Federer in this past Sunday's finale in Montreal.

This week's winner will collect $400,000.
